That wasn't a compliment

Charlie is dressed in a way that was stylish when we were in middle school.

me: hey Charlie, you're uh...wearing a button-down shirt without buttoning any of the buttons huh?

Charlie: yea I'm stylish like that

me: I haven't seen that style in a very long time

Charlie: why thank you

me: ...that wasn't exactly a compliment

At a company-wide work event Charlie : you know what I should do when I meet new people from work? I should act like we already know each other through email but this is our first time meeting in person. Say something like "heyyy, so nice to finally meet you in person" me : .....why?
